Barbican was inspired by a trip to Alnwick castle in Northumberland in the Summer of 2011. The imposing Barbican (fortified gate) stands at the main entrance to the castle and would have been a formidable sight to any enemy.
The programmatic music tells a story about an attack on the castle, starting with the castle rising out of the mist, preparations for battle, prayer and contemplation prior to the attack and the battle itself followed by a victory march. Some exciting movements together with beautiful slow sections tells a story in music. A great addition to your concert repertoire.
